What’s Up With the Blood Brain Barrier?

The Blood Brain Barrier (BBB) isolates the brain from the blood flow taking place throughout the body.  Simply put, it protects the brain by selectively allowing nutrients to pass through the blood and into the brain while keeping toxic substances out.  The body’s natural defenses anticipate potential hazards to the brain and block entry accordingly.

Scientists, including Leif Salford, M.D., PhD a neurosurgeon at Lund University in Sweden, have been studying the effects of microwave exposure on the BBB for several decades in rodent experiments.  There conclusions have been re-tested in various studies and confirmed the same results:  Cell phone radiation exposure breaks down the Blood Brain Barrier.

In one research study, a single two-hour exposure next to a cell phone permanently damaged the BBB.  Destruction of brain cells in areas which concern learning, memory and movement have also been observed during postmortem examination. We do know that the BBB damage is observed in patients with various neuronal diseases including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s so maintaining and protecting the Blood Brain Barrier seems to be an essential component to healthy brain function.

What about medicine and drugs which we are prescribed?  Might a weakened or diminished Blood Brain Barrier cause problems with medicines we are taking?  Are these medicines developed to be crossing the BBB or not?  This is a further question that scientists, doctors and pharmacists should contemplate and research.

The best we can do as consumers and users of cellular telephony is to take care when using these devices:  distance yourself from the source of emissions, use the speaker or text function and remind your loved ones to do the same.  Use your head!

We all need our brains.

Get Cell Phones Out of Pockets

For years, scientists have noted the reduction in sperm count and quality in men who keep their cellphones in their front pockets.  Now there is more concern for men who habitually carry phones in their pockets.  Researchers have published a peer-reviewed study in the Central European Journal of Urology demonstrating that cellphone front pocket placement has been associated with erectile dysfunction.
Two groups of men were observed over the course of 6 years. The first group suffered from dysfunction but the second group did not. The only significant difference concerned the use of cell phones and heightened pocket placement used by the first group.

Dr. Ashok Agarwal, professor of Reproductive Science at the Cleveland Clinic has studied sperm collapse associated with cell phone use for several years.  His published article titled “Cell Phones: Modern Man’s Nemesis” explains the dangers associated with cell phone use and male reproductive health.

This new publication concerning erectile dysfunction should sound an alarm for men.  Male reproductive health is essential to fertility, healthy children and sexual enjoyment.

There are enough red flags telling us to get phones out of our pockets.  It’s time to heed these warnings.

Smart Revolution: Maybe It’s Not So Smart

Ericsson just released their study mapping and predicting the growth of smartphones over the next few years.  Already predicted this year to surpass oil as the largest global industry, smartphones, according to Ericsson, will reach some 9.3 billion subscribers worldwide by 2019.

Ericsson’s VP and Head of Strategy, Douglas Gilstrap stated: “It took more than 5 years to reach the first billion smartphone subscriptions, but it will take less than 2 to hit the two billion mark.”  This is a remarkable “hockey-stick” growth model by any standard.  Yet what about the usage and evolution of these smartphones?  How might they affect human health by misuse in the consumer market?

These are questions that scientists are researching, pondering, and warning consumers about.  Of particular concern are the smart devices which encourage use which is too close to the head and body.  For example, Google Glass, smart watches and wrist phones all suggest that body contact and close proximity is acceptable.  There has been no testing to suggest that smart devices are safe used up against the head and body and as such, many doctors and scientists have raised alarm bells.
Dr. David Gultekin at Memorial Sloane-Kettering Cancer Center has demonstrated that cellular radiation creates hot spots in human brains.  “When they’re designing and developing a new product and introducing it, very rarely the health aspects of it is mentioned or not mentioned at all,” states Dr. Gultekin.  Dr. Martin Black, Professor Emeritus of Cellular Biophysics at Columbia University underscored these remarks by adding that his studies observed that rodent DNA was altered by cellular radiation exposure:  “When you get a situation where a problem arises, you invoke what’s known as the ‘precautionary principle,’ [and] you take a certain amount of precaution as a result of a risk that has been identified.”

Public advocacy groups, many scientists, doctors and now numerous governmental agencies worldwide are calling out for increased precautionary regulations and warnings to be issued about cellular radiation concerns.  It stands to reason that consumers are safest when they take matters into their own hands.  Why wait for the debate to subside and science to establish without a doubt that cellular radiating devices, improperly used or handled, can cause illness?  Keep yourself healthy and maintain distance between your head/body and your smartphone.  You’ll be smarter for it!

Wireless Radiation Hazards: Accupuncture to Karolinska Institute Studies

It is hard to believe that the genesis of the smartphone and Wi-Fi “revolution” dates back a mere 7 years.  We all marveled at the miracles of the first smartphones and we snapped up Wi-Fi installations as a simple, cordless solution for data transmission.
Despite the ease and ubiquity of this technology, red flags have appeared within the both the health sector and scientific communities.  A couple of examples will suffice to illustrate the potential pandemic dangers posed by unbridled use of this technology.

The prestigious journal, “The American Acupuncturist” in 2009 published a study by Dr. Leon Hammer, M.D., LAc titled “The Pulse, the Electronic Age and Radiation:  Early Detection.”  In this study, Dr. Hammer states that the once rare, Leather Pulse, is now measurable in most of the population under 50.  This once rare pulse had been associated uniquely with trauma, hemorrhaging, and ionizing sources of radiation exposure.  The only recent environmental addition which could account for this dramatic rise in Leather Pulse readings is the use and proliferation of non-ionizing cellular technologies.  Our population has been adversely effected across the board and our health is at risk.  To quote segments of the study:
“Radiation-induced pathogenic heat presents unique challenges to a remarkably adaptive human organism [yet] the body has no defense against this pathogen, and the most immediate serious consequence is cell mutation and ultimately neo-plastic activity (tumors and cancer).”

Across the Atlantic at the Karolinska Institute, Professor Olle Johansson, PhD and his team of epidemiologists has raised similar red flags through their research on the effects of Wi-Fi non-ionizing radiation on living tissue.  The results were alarming in that rodents exposed to Wi-Fi at similar comparative levels to human exposure demonstrated a marked increase in sterility with species wide sterility at the 5th generation!

Although some engineers and physicists continue to state that non-ionizing radiation cannot affect humans because the atoms remain unchanged, the fact of the matter remains that living tissue, which is composed of atoms, is in fact being affected!  Further scientific work needs to begin forthwith to determine WHY non-ionizing radiation is having adverse effects on living matter.  Apples fell from trees long before Newton discovered the Law of Gravity.  There is a Law here which is waiting to be uncovered.  Our children and their children are counting on it!

Effects of 4G Emissions on the Brain

A newly published peer reviewed double-blind study which measured short term effects of 4G radiation on the brain has established that brain neural activity is impacted not only in areas close to exposure but also in remote parts of the brain.

This study, sponsored by the China Academy of Telecommunication Research, measured exposure to 4G LTE-based cellular networks after only 30 minutes of use.

4G represents a powerful evolution in cellular transmission.  The 4G LTE employs MIMO (multiple-input-multiple-output) technology, also known as “beamforming.”  This translates into complex and very intelligent radios inside your cell phone that multiplex channels and antennas in the device to deliver incredible speed, also known as broadband connection.  Unless the cell phone is in airplane mode, it is constantly communicating with base stations, GPS, Wi-Fi, NFC (Near Field Communication), etc.   This makes for a dynamic and powerful device.

Despite the increasing number of studies published which point to adverse health effects from long-term use of cell phones, many folks still hold their phone up against the head and body.  Recent published observations associating breast cancer with pocket or brassiere cell phone placement suggests further that we need to take care when using cellular devices. Young people, who will experience a life-time of cell phone use, should make an effort to learn to use their cellular devices more safely.  Our phones are now great companions and indispensable to our modern life.  That said, it’s our job to know how to use them with care.  Remember to keep your cell phone back away from your head and body and remind your children and loved ones to do likewise.

Link Between Cell Phone Use and Malignant Brain Tumors

Published at the end of August in the International Journal of Oncology, this new study analyzed the association between malignant brain tumors diagnosed between 2007 and 2009 and mobile and cordless phone use.

Specifically, the researchers sought to examine the relationship between long-term cell phone use and its correlation with the development of brain cancer.  In short, the findings supported the hypothesis that non-ionizing radiation plays a role in the initiation and growth of cancer.

This supports the World Health Organization’s classification of cell phone radiation as a Class 2B possible carcinogen.  Further studies such as this new Swedish publication may soon compel WHO’s cancer division, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, to re-visit this classification ranking.  There are numerous scientists world-wide who support the position that cell phone emissions are probably carcinogenic.

In addition to observing the link between long-term cell phone use and cancer, additional takeaways from this new Swedish study should be cause for alarm.  The study looked at analogue use going back over two decades prior to the introduction of digital cellular devices.  The digital phones demonstrated both initiation of cancer and its promotion.  The 2G and 3G phones were not in use long during the timeframe of this study group however the increased incidence of cancer among this group was significant.  What does this mean for 4G phone use as we currently have throughout the cellular market today?  Cell phone users must take care to keep their phones back away from their heads. One thing we can all agree on:  It will be too late to say “sorry” if brain cancer is diagnosed.

Los Angeles Unified School District iPad Fiasco

In case you hadn’t heard, the LAUSD decided last Spring to indulge in a $1,000,000,000 expenditure program designed to give out an iPad to each student in the District.  Despite numerous appeals by scientists and public health advocates highlighting the dangers for children associated with Wi-Fi and non-ionizing radiation exposure, the District marched ahead with an initial iPad pilot distribution this Fall to more than 2000 high school students in the District.

Apple and the kids seem to be the only players in this transaction that have profited.  Although security measures were installed to prevent “unauthorized” web access, the students quickly cracked through the security system and proceeded to play games, chat and Facebook their friends while using these devices.  This inevitable outcome seems to have come as a surprise only to the District officials.  When the schools then tried to confiscate and take back the iPads, a large number of them had already gone missing with little hope of being returned.

It is staggering to consider the lack of planning or foresight that went into this program.  It is unrealistic to ask kids not to play with “toys” if you distribute them.  School officials throughout the country can learn from this fiasco.  Firstly, iPads as learning and research tools, should only be deployed with specialized and monitored use.  Kids get hooked quickly on Wi-Fi devices and lose focus and interest in academic projects.  Let’s face it; it’s a lot more fun to play than it is to work.  Schools would save literally billions of dollars if they stuck to the basics in terms of learning tools:  Teachers, blackboards, books, pencils and paper.  The kids would be smarter and our schools districts richer!

Cell Phone Radiation Hazards

While the New York Times published its Baby iPhone App product story yesterday, Belgium was busy outlawing cell phones for kids.  What information does Belgium have which compels their government to act proactively for children’s safety while the U.S. seems to remain oblivious as to health concerns around cellular emissions?  Public health advocacy groups is the U.S. should be outraged.

In wasn’t too long ago, back in 2006, when national conversations were taking place trying to underscore the need that we have to protect kids from cellular emissions in the face of not knowing about the long term health concerns.  The introduction of smartphones seems to have been the big game changer.  They are so easy to love; it’s hard to remember that they come with a user manual indicating proximity requirements and most importantly, that these smartphones are not toys!

Frankly, the 2011 World Health Organization’s classification of cell phones as a “Class 2 B Possible Carcinogen,” should have put the final kabosh on the idea that cell phones are safe for kids.  Unfortunately, the U.S. is falling way behind in its proactive posture.  France, the U.K., Belgium, Israel and Russia all have legislation restricting use of non-ionizing devices and such corresponding technology by children.

Apps for babies imply that the baby will be in close proximity to the phone or cellular device.  This is potentially hazardous and reckless given that cell phone manuals all restrict the end user to keep the device roughly an inch away from the body.  Oh yes, but I forgot… babies can’t read.

Parents, please practice safer cell phone use with your children.  Smartphone apps can be fun but they run the risk of exposing children to unacceptable levels of non-ionizing emissions.

The Ongoing Disaster at Fukushima

Most of what we write about at our blog concerns non-ionizing radiation.  Ionizing radiation is the stuff of nuclear bombs and nuclear power plant disasters.  Both pose hazards to life forms.  Both elude the senses:  We can’t see, hear, smell, taste or touch this radiation.  Nonetheless, the radiation is present and it is affecting us.

What’s going on currently at Fukushima, the site of the disastrous 2011 earthquake, tsunami and subsequent meltdown of 3 nuclear reactors?   Folks may not realize it but the disaster is ongoing.  Japan’s Nuclear Regulatory Authority recently informed the world that over 300 tons of radioactive water leaked from a storage tank into the surrounding groundwater and nearby sea.  In addition, radiation levels around some of the storage tanks is now 18 times higher than previously measured – radioactive enough to kill an unprotected man in 4 hours!

Radioactive fallout has now reached the West Coast of the United States both by sea and air.  This is an ongoing environmental disaster of world-wide proportions.

The make-shift storage tanks were brought in after the reactor melt-downs in order to house the built up of radioactive water – an ongoing problem.  The tanks and the crippled reactors are vulnerable in the event of another quake.  As these nuclear reactors, like most in Japan, are situated on the ocean, the likelihood of a total collapse of these crippled structures into the sea remains a horrifying possibility if a strong earthquake were to occur.
Attempts are now underway to “freeze” the ground around the reactors to prevent further spillage into the surrounding groundwater and sea.  Various methods are being considered.  Green Swan, Inc. has developed patent pending technology that may help with these efforts.  One thing is for sure, this is the greatest nuclear disaster yet to face humanity and time is a luxury we don’t have.

Back to School Time

As our kids head back to school, consumer choices abound regarding digital aids for academic work.  Keep in mind that the old rule, “less is more” is even truer for youngsters.   Ask yourselves as parents and caregivers whether or not the desired electronic device is really necessary.  After all, if we are focused on learning for children, the basics will always be superior:  physical books, paper, pencils and writing.

Smartphones, while a convenient means of keeping track of your children, pose many distracting opportunities which can detract from the learning experience.  Consider installing an application which can track your child’s user activities and allow you to shut the phone off remotely if necessary.

Many schools are now installing Wi-Fi throughout their campuses.  Check with the school principal and discuss the health ramifications of this non-ionizing radiation exposure.  Numerous scientific bodies as well as the European Environmental Agency have recommended against Wi-Fi use in schools.  On March 19, 2013 the French National Assembly voted in favor of Ethernet connectivity in schools instead of Wi-Fi in order to better protect children’s health.
Remember:  Follow the Precautionary Principle especially where children are concerned.
